“Every morning, Ghulam Haider, a 74-year-old man, drags himself to Syed Imtiaz Ali Chowk in Lahore. His frail hands shake as he picks up heavy bundles of newspapers, selling them for just £1.00 / $1.20 / Rs. 300 a day.”
This is Ghulam’s reality: a life spent in survival mode, earning a mere £1 a day. For 55 years, he has done this, never knowing rest or comfort, just the relentless drive to feed his family. But now, after so many years, his body is starting to fail him. His legs ache with every step, his chest tightens, and each movement feels as if it could be his last.
“But I have no choice,” Ghulam says. “If I don’t work, my family doesn’t eat.”
Ghulam has three children. His eldest son is fighting a battle with addiction, but Ghulam can’t afford the treatment that could help him. His two other children depend on him, yet this frail 74-year-old man is struggling to carry the weight of his family’s survival.
“I don’t dream anymore,” Ghulam confides. “I gave up on that long ago. If I could just earn £67 / $80 / Rs. 25,000 a month, we could survive—not live, just survive.”
At night, Ghulam works as a watchman. But there’s no salary, just a place to sleep—on a cold courtyard floor with no roof. The winter’s chill gnaws at his bones, but he rises every morning and returns to the chowk because he has no other choice.
“Sometimes, I take a piece of bread and feed the pigeons. I hope maybe God will see my heart and have mercy on us,” he says.
Ghulam’s life is not simply one of poverty; it is one of desperation, of a 74-year-old man fighting every day to put food on the table for his children. His body is giving out, but his heart refuses to stop fighting.
How Zakat Can Help Ghulam
Ghulam’s story is a powerful reminder of how small acts of kindness can change lives. With just £67 / $80 / Rs. 25,000 a month, Ghulam could provide his family with food, buy medicine for his deteriorating health, and secure a roof over his head.
Your Zakat could be the lifeline Ghulam desperately needs. Every penny donated will go directly to supporting him and his family, helping them survive their daily struggles with dignity.
