"When it rains, the water leaks everywhere. We try to cover the holes, but it’s never enough."
Maya sits quietly outside her fragile home, her gaze fixed on the makeshift structure behind her. The walls lean at awkward angles, held together by scraps of wood and metal, while the roof, patched with tarpaulin and worn fabric, offers little protection from the elements.
For nearly four years, Maya and her husband, Mahendro, have endured an existence shaped by hardship. Their world was upended by a road accident that left Mahendro with a broken leg and a permanent disability. Once the family’s sole provider, he now spends his days confined to their home, unable to work.
"Since the accident, everything has changed," Maya says, her voice steady despite the weight of her words. "I go to different houses to ask for food. That’s how we manage to eat. Some days, people are kind, and we eat. Other days, there’s nothing."
Hunger has become an unwelcome companion. "We try to sleep through it, but it’s hard," she adds, her tone soft but tinged with exhaustion. The struggle is relentless: hunger, illness, and the ever-looming threat of their home collapsing during the rains.
Maya and Mahendro’s life together spans 25 years, but their days are marked by solitude. They have no children or extended family to rely on. Maya’s strength and resilience are evident as she shoulders the responsibility for their survival. "We live in constant worry," she confesses. "I pray every day for someone to see our struggles and help us."
Their plea is not for extravagance but for the essentials—a safe place to sleep, enough food to eat, and medical care for Mahendro. These basic needs, which so many of us take for granted, are elusive for Maya and her husband.
"If only we could have a proper home," she says, her voice breaking slightly. "Just a roof that doesn’t leak, enough food to quiet our hunger, and medicine for my husband."
Their story is a stark reminder of the realities faced by those living on the margins. Poverty has stripped away not just material comforts but also the simple security of knowing where their next meal will come from.
Zakat, one of the pillars of Islam, is a powerful means of alleviating such suffering. The Qur'an reminds us: "Whatever you spend in good, it will be repaid to you in full, and you will not be wronged" (2:272).
By supporting Maya and Mahendro, you are not just fulfilling a religious obligation; you are answering the prayers of a family on the brink. With your Zakat, they could repair their home, ensure regular meals, and access medical care for Mahendro.
How You Can Help
Maya and Mahendro’s story is not just about survival; it’s about the enduring hope that someone will extend a helping hand. Even the smallest act of kindness can make a profound difference.
Join our campaign, Maya’s Resilience: A Shelter for Survival. Your donation can be the reason this couple no longer sleeps hungry or fears the collapse of their home.
