"We’re really struggling for our survival. Sometimes, we even go to bed hungry."
In the quiet, forgotten corners of the Bahatri neighbourhood, Mehta faces daily battles that no one should have to endure. Since the death of her husband two years ago, she has carried the weight of her family’s survival alone, fighting against poverty with every ounce of strength she has.
Her days are spent in an endless cycle of worry, work, and exhaustion. "I wake up every morning, thinking of how to get through the day," she says softly. "But at night, I often wonder if we’ll have enough to eat."
Mehta lives with her son and daughter, and though they are all bound by love and determination, their circumstances are fragile. The looming uncertainty of her daughter’s marriage weighs heavily on Mehta’s heart, compounded by their inability to provide the basic necessities of life.
Together, they make scarves and sew quilts for people in their community, hoping that each stitch will bring in enough to feed their family. "If we work all month, we hardly manage to earn 500 rupees," Mehta explains, her voice tinged with the sorrow of a mother who would do anything to give her children more. "It’s very difficult to make ends meet."
The constant struggle to feed her family, the looming uncertainty of her daughter’s future, and the fear of not being able to provide the next meal have become Mehta’s everyday reality. But amid the hardship, she dreams of a better future.
Mehta’s dream is simple yet profound: she longs for stability, a steady income, and the ability to provide her children with the basic dignity of food and security. "I just want to feed my children without worrying about where the next meal will come from," she says, her eyes filled with quiet desperation.
For Mehta, it’s not about luxury—it’s about survival and self-reliance. With a modest amount of £40 a month, she could ensure that her family never goes to bed hungry again. And with £150, she could establish a small shop, a source of steady income that would give her family the chance to live without constant fear.
A shop would change everything, Mehta reflects. "It would give us the chance to stand on our own two feet, to work with dignity, and to know that we can provide for ourselves."
Zakat: A Means to Uplift Those in Need
In Islam, Zakat is a powerful way to transform lives. Allah reminds us in the Qur’an: "And establish prayer and give zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves—you will find it with Allah" (2:110).
