“I’m 16, but I feel 60. Every morning, I wake up thinking, ‘If I don’t go out today, my family won’t eat.’ I’ve been thinking this way for as long as I can remember.”
Mudassir Ahmad, a young man living in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, has faced unimaginable challenges from a young age. Paralysed from the waist down, he has spent every day working to support his family. His wheelchair has served him for years, its wheels worn down, the frame creaking, but it continues to keep him moving through his struggle.
“I want people to see me as a worker, not a beggar,” Mudassir says, his voice filled with pride. “I work hard, and I’m proud of that.”
Mudassir earns between 500 and 800 PKR a day (£2.50–£4), just enough to cover his rent and provide basic food for his family. But his wheelchair is falling apart, and the constant strain on his body is taking its toll. Every day, his arms ache, his hands are blistered, and his back feels like it's breaking. Yet, he continues, driven by his responsibility to support his unemployed mother and brothers.
“When I get home, my arms ache, my hands are blistered, and my back feels like it’s breaking,” Mudassir shares, “But this is my responsibility. Allah gives me the strength, so I do it.”
Despite the unbearable physical pain, Mudassir’s resolve never wavers. He refuses to turn to begging and wants to show others that even when life is hard, work can still be done with dignity.
“There are so many people who turn to begging when life gets hard. I want to show them that you can work, even if your body doesn’t work the way it should. You can still earn with dignity.”
The Struggles and Hope for a Better Tomorrow
Mudassir’s strength, however, is not limitless. His wheelchair needs urgent repairs, and the demands of supporting his family are more than he can bear on his own.
“Sometimes, I wonder how long I can keep this up,” he admits, “But then I pray, and I know Allah will guide me. He always has.”
Mudassir’s story is not one of hopelessness, but of unrelenting resilience, hope, and the need for a helping hand. He never asks for pity, only for support to make his daily struggles a little easier.
