"My mother’s last words to me were, ‘Take care of your siblings.’ I promised her I would. But how can I, when I’m barely surviving myself?"

For 10 years, Shahzaib, a young man from Lahore, has been locked in a relentless battle with kidney disease. Living with just one kidney and relying on dialysis, every day is a fight to stay alive. His parents, both taken by illness, left him as the sole provider and guardian of his younger siblings: 10-year-old Noor Fatima and his teenage brother.

Noor prays every night for her brother’s health. Her small hands fold in earnest, asking Allah to keep him alive. Meanwhile, Shahzaib’s teenage brother gave up his education to work odd jobs, doing everything he can to support the family.

But it’s not enough.

"I watch my brother come home exhausted, and it breaks me. I was supposed to be the one looking after them, not the other way around."

With no extended family stepping in and mounting medical bills, Shahzaib’s family is on the brink of collapse. He struggles to afford even the bare essentials: dialysis, food, and school supplies for Noor.

Despite everything, Shahzaib refuses to give up.

"I won’t let my siblings suffer more than they already have. I may not have much strength left, but I still have faith."
