"Every day, I shape clay with my hands, but no matter how hard I work, I cannot shape the future for my children."
Soomar’s hands are his livelihood. Calloused and cracked from years of moulding clay, they tell the story of a man who has spent his entire life working tirelessly for his family. He sits on a low stool outside his modest home, surrounded by the clay pots he crafts with such care. These pots are his only means of income, and yet, they are not enough.
"I earn just 200 or 300 rupees after working from sunrise to sunset," he says, his voice a mix of weariness and resolve. It is hard to fathom how he has managed to sustain his family on such a meagre income, but Soomar’s love for his children fuels his determination. "I keep going for them. Everything I do is for them."
His youngest daughter is still in school, filled with hope and ambition. His son, despite having completed his matriculation, has been unable to secure stable employment and now works as a day labourer. Yet, Soomar’s heaviest burden is arranging the marriage of his eldest daughter.
"A daughter’s wedding is a moment of joy," he says, pausing as his eyes fill with tears. "But for me, it feels like an insurmountable mountain. I don’t have the means to give her even the simplest ceremony."
In Soomar’s culture, a daughter’s wedding is a sacred duty, a rite of passage that every parent dreams of fulfilling. But for him, it has become a source of anguish. "How can I provide for this when I can barely feed my family?" he asks, his voice breaking.
Soomar’s story is one of relentless sacrifice. Each day, he labours in the searing heat, shaping clay pots by hand. As he grows older, the physical toll becomes harder to bear. Yet he pushes forward, driven by an unwavering sense of responsibility. "I have sold what little we had, but it is never enough. I am growing weaker, but my children still need me. How can I stop?"
The modest amounts he requires—140 rupees to sustain his clay pot business and 285 pounds to arrange his daughter’s wedding—represent hope for his family. For Soomar, these sums are not just numbers; they are lifelines.
Zakat, the giving of alms, is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam. It is a means of purifying our wealth and bringing relief to those in need. In the Qur'an, Allah says: "And establish prayer and give zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves—you will find it with Allah" (2:110).
Soomar’s plea is simple yet profound. "If there is any kind-hearted person for the sake of Allah who can help us, please assist me with my daughter’s marriage," he says. His voice carries both desperation and an unyielding faith in the mercy of Allah and the generosity of others.
His story is not just about financial hardship—it is a testament to the strength of a father’s love and the power of hope. Soomar does not dream of riches; he dreams of providing for his family, of giving his daughter the dignity she deserves on her wedding day.
